You know how frustrating it can be if you’ve ever had frozen coils on your A/C. Not only is your home not getting cool, but the ice can eventually cause damage to the unit.
So what causes coils to freeze, and how can you prevent it from happening? There are a few things that can cause your coils to freeze:
1. Dirty coils
Dirty coils are one of the most common causes of frozen coils. The job of the coils is to remove heat from the air, and if they’re dirty, they can’t do their job properly. Over time, dust and dirt will build up on the coils, and you’ll need to clean them off to keep your A/C running efficiently.
2. Low refrigerant levels
The refrigerant is what helps to remove heat from the air, so if there isn’t enough of it, the coils can’t do their job. Have an expert from Biard & Crockett over to ensure your refrigerant levels are where they should be. If they’re low, it can cause your coils to freeze.
3. Blocked airflow
If the coils are covered or blocked in any way, the air can’t circulate properly, and the coils can’t remove the heat from the air. Keep the air flowing. Make sure there is good airflow around your coils. If they’re covered or blocked, it can cause them to freeze.
If you find that your coils have already frozen, there are a few things you can do to thaw them out:
1. Turn off your A/C unit – The first thing you should do is turn off your unit. This will prevent any further damage to your coils.
2. Let the ice melt – Once you’ve turned off your A/C unit, let the ice melt on its own. Do not try to speed up the process by using a hairdryer or other heating element.
3. Check for leaks – Once the ice has melted, check your unit for any leaks. If you find any, have them repaired as soon as possible by an expert Biard & Crockett technician!
If you find that your coils are frozen, don’t panic! There are a few things you can do to get them thawed out and prevent them from freezing again in the future. Just follow the steps above, and you’ll have your A/C unit up and running in no time.
