Are you plagued with early spring allergies? Here’s one thing that might be making them worse … dry air!
Why spring allergies are so bad
First off, as you probably already know if you suffer from spring allergies, the reason for them is (usually) pollen. All foliage, from trees to flowers to grass to weeds, are letting their little grains out into the air for fertilizing. The one place they aren’t supposed to end up is in someone’s nose, but that doesn’t stop them!
And pollen isn’t just coming from your own yard and places you walk past. It actually travels along the wind for miles on end, so even if you keep your landscaping as trimmed back as possible and try to avoid coming into contact with too much pollen, such as staying indoors when pollen counts are highest, it may not help much! In fact, depending on conditions inside your home, you can actually feel worse indoors …
How dry air can make your allergy symptoms worse
It’s impossible to remove all pollen from your home’s air entirely. (Although, a HEPA filter installed by Biard & Crockett can remove up to 99% of pollen from your home’s air by filtering the air through an extremely, extremely fine mesh!) So what is an allergic person to do? Of course, a trip to a doctor, especially an allergist, can definitely help. Allergy medications such as antihistamines to reduce your body’s allergic response, and decongestants that relieve nasal congestion effects, are helpful too! But, have you ever thought about how your symptoms, such as a runny or stuffy nose, or sneezing and coughing, could also be made worse by dry air?
Dry air could be making things worse
After all, as you know, California air is pretty dry, even year-round.
With not very much precipitation, any humidity you want in your home is going to have to be an add-on! This is especially true when the Santa Ana winds are around in May through September, but even during the other months, the air can be dry to an uncomfortable extent!
It’s hard to know at any given time of year here in Orange County whether you’ll want to use your humidifier or your dehumidifier!
Especially because, dry air can make your allergy symptoms worse. Your nasal passages need some moisture, and dry air dries them out. This makes it easier for allergens to bypass your nose and get into your lungs. Also, your lungs need moisture for your bronchial fluid, and without that, your respiratory system will be irritated. Thus making you cough and wheeze more!
